When skin or organs are damaged, the body’s natural way of healing itself
involves the formation of scar tissue. Scar tissue is a fibrous type of connective tissue that helps to close wounds. Although it is a vital and necessary part of the healing process, scar tissue doesn’t have the flexabilty of the tissues it replaces. This means that scars can hinder free movement of joints and muscles resulting in decresed mobility. Scars can also cause tissues to become matted together causing pain, and in some cases, lack of sensation in the area.
Massage therapy can help to address these issues, by working on and around the scar to realign muscle fibers, break up matted scar tissue that is hindering movement and sometimes help to get sensation back into surrounding tissues.
Massage can also help to deal with left over swelling in the area due to trauma or surgery. Areas that have been worked on previously with much success include scars from: Joint Replacements, Mastectomies/Lumpectomies, Cesarian Sections, Burns, Carpal Tunnel Surgury and Traumatic Injuries.
